Since July 2011 I have been in this hotel 4 or 5 times and If I have to go back to Kolkata, definitely I will stay there again.
Rooms are spacious and well decorated, food is good and location is very convenient. But what makes this hotel so special is the staff. Starting from the Duty Manager, Vedika, including the receptionists, waiters and even house keeping guys, are always with a smile and making you feel like you are the most special guest of the hotel.

Although I wish there were more convenient stores around as in Park Street, its very close to Forum and Fab India and cabs are quick to find. The staff at this hotel was sincerely helpful. My room safe did not work which was a bit of an inconvenience. Otherwise great ambience, great beakfast spread but it was the comfort of the beds that's going to bring me back to this hotel ! Absololutely lived up to its promise.

This hotel is like a revolution in terms of design and culture! Everything is so stylish and well thought out.. its just amazing.. I loved my jazzy room and the bose system which was in it! Everything has a touch of flamboyance without being over the top. Loved the food too.. the chocolate crepe from Nosh deserves special mention! There was a pillow menu!!!

Lastly, the wit is what did it for me! The restaurant is called Khanasutra!!!! :D

I was left speechless with the character of the hotel, right from the facade to the interiors of my room. Having travelled quite a bit before checking in I was in real need of sleep and what better place than those fat beds, absolute pleasure, Im getting one for myself for sure. I thoroughly enjoyed the scrumptious meal at Khanasutra, what fine Indian dining. The service was brilliant, the staff very helpful. Amenities provided were commendable, with free wifi internet and a good library with a diverse collection of books. Would recommend this to any and everyone, definitely the best hotel in Kolkata.

This place is extraordinary -- and excellent value for its very modest price. The modern design is uplifting: your spirit soars as you enter the lobby, and the interest only increases as you make your way up to your room.

The room is understated contemporary -- but everything you might want is there. The lighting is fabulous even if it takes a bit of searching to find all the correct controls.

Food -- both Indian and Western is excellent. I had a plate of idlies upon arrival, and they were perfect, the sambar and chutneys magnificent. I also tried a Western fish dish with garlic mashed potatoes and it, too, was superb. Before I left, I ordered some Mexican quesadillas, and they also were perfection. The breakfast buffet was terrific too, although
I would have liked those idlies included (available by special order only) and I would have liked them to avoid serving bacon when there are so many customers who cannot eat pork for religious reasons and will worry about other food being contaminated.

The staff are the best, and without exception. Everyone tries to help in every way possible, and is friendly as well as professional. I was given a generous late check out and looked after in any way possible. I found this place preferable to large chains like Taj not only because of the personal service but also the small scale, which somehow makes the hotel special.

I was unhappy, however, upon checkout, to have my bill automatically charged in US dollars. India's currency is the rupee, and customers should always be asked if they will accept billing in another currency. The catch, of course, is that a poor exchange rate is given when you are billed in dollars and the cost ends up being more than with a bill in rupees and exchange by the credit card company!

But this was a small hiccup: overall, this is a hotel to cherish and come back to: I most certainly will be delighted to return!

What a find, what a find!!! This is such an phenomenal, designer, modern and new hotel that I wish I have better words to describe it. What an oasis in the chaos of busy Kolkata! Room are not only immaculately clean and spotless, but also have such an unique design that one feels like in chic hotel in South Beach Miami instead of Kolkata (check photos). Much better than Oberoi and Taj where we previously stayed (much newer and in MUCH better shape). Rooms and bathroom are also perfect size, even for 2 people to feel not squeezed at all. My husband and I had plenty space! WiFi internet worked fine in rooms (we stayed on the 3rd floor) and was included in the price as well as buffet breakfast which was great. It had a lot of options, fresh continental and cooked Indian (including omelets and dosas). Only downsides were that waiters started taking buffet food away at 10:30 on the dot, so you have to take your food to your table by that time. And staff at check-in counter were incompetent (never responded to our emails - so book on-line via their web site; slow check-in and check-out) but relatively to all other good things about this hotel, it was forgotten soon. Other staff was quite nice and helpful though. All in all this is an AMAZING value for money and highly recommended place to stay in Kolkata.

It is clean, effecient and reasonably priced, the staff are curteous, helpful and if sometimes overstretched always keen to give the best service possible. The rooms are small but very cleanm bright, tidy and functional, all have free wireless internet which is an essential for a business traveller. The hotel serves good Indian food and has an internation menu too. You will not meet many western people there yet but this will change as the hotel gets more popular. I have stayed in 5 star plus hotels in Kolkata and prefer the Chrome above them by miles :)

This is the first time I am writing a trip advisor review. Just because I thought that I should let people know my experience in this hotel. We were so well looked after from the moment we walked through the front door to the second they put us in a taxi to the airport two days later. The hotel is very modern, exceptional clean, it is centrally located. We had booked a deluxe room. The room was beautiful and the porter showed us round and told us how to work the tv and internet and how the safe locker in the  cupboard worked. We looked around our room, modern, aesthetically decorated, moderately large bed. The only disappointment about this room was the size it was a little cramped and i thought we might get a bit annoyed over the lack of space with 3 night in it. So my wife called reception and asked if there were any larger rooms of the same standard. Brilliantly we were upgraded to a junior suite for free but it wasn't going to be ready for a couple of hours. This was fine with us as we had time to go and meet a relative. We were told to leave our bags in our current room and move them when we got the keys to the new room. When we came back the keys were ready for us and we moved our stuff. The new room was was well worth it because of the size of the room. We had a recliner in the room, massive bed and well sized bathroom. The only bit that was missing was the view but this was no big problem. The products in the bathrooms were great and replaced regularly and they had no problems about bringing you a plentiful supply were you to ask.Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was fabulous. The selection of fruits, juices were fantastic and the most divine the massive cook stations. There was a great selection of cooked to order choices. I have eggs royale, eggs florentine and finally pancakes on the last day - simply divine. The staff was attentive and quickly removed any unwanted plates and checked you didn't want any more tea or coffee. We also ate in the restaurant for dinner on one of our nights which was a fabulous experience. We were made to sit in one of their special gazebos which itself is an experience by itself. The gazebos are well designed wooden cubicles with mood lighting filtering through the randomly punctured holes on its roof. Excellent Design. The meal was delicious. We were also brought a lovely welcome platter specially crafted by the chief chef. The food is some of the best I have tasted in any restaurant and would highly recommend this.We simply cannot fault this hotel and have also looked at going back again in the near future. The staff cannot do enough for you and are so polite. The building is one of the stunning structures I have seen. It had asymmetrical punctures on its façade which has lights inside. And that changes colors in the night which gives the façade a glorious look. It is in a perfect location for the town and it took us 15 minutes to walk to the main street. We are so glad we decided not to stay in the swissotel which was also on our list as it was very out of the way. There was a turndown service on every night – Beds properly folded, pillows fluffed, a foot mat neatly arranged along with the slippers and an orchid flower. One of the amazing inventions I have seen is that the pillow menus are printed on a minutest, and a miniature pillow which was one of their cutest inventions. We did however receive the water and clean glass each day after our room was cleaned. We can also recommend eating in Little Italy a busy Italian restaurant in the City.Really enjoyed our stay here and would go back in a flash.

Good location. Having all the modern facilities including Wi-Fi connection. Its clean and tidy which is most necessary for most of us. Breakfast is complimentary. The most attractive part that it has a DVD library which has a very good collection of english movies. Thus it was a soothing experience to return from work, have dinner select a good movie and watch it before going to sleep.

The one thing that strikes positively when you enter The Chrome is the "genuine smile" on every staff's face, one of the rarest commodity to find in this so called professional world. This feel good factor remains with you throughout your stay. Coupled with this, clean rooms and well appointed rooms are a plus.

We were in Kolkata the 11th of March and had booked the hotel via a website in Germany.
All went well, we arrived late at night and were warmly welcomed by the staff.
The rooms are nice and clean . We required a 3rd bed into our room because we were 3 and this was absolutely no problem.
The breakfest was absolutely great, tasteful and opulent.
And in addition to that it was no problem to just store our luggage for a few hours without booking a room, when we arrived in Kolkata coming back from Sikkim. The airport doesn't provide storage possibilities for luggage and we were not allowed to enter the airport until 2h prior departure for check in. So we simply took a taxi to Chrome and asked for storage, so we didn't need to stay in front of the airport looking after our luggage, but could go to the city again for a walk.

Welcome to the Chrome side of Kolkata...that was how I was greeted when I first called to check on this new boutique hotel in Kolkata...it looks like a cheese from outside... :)
Intriguing well yes that is what it was. I decided to try it and found the best deal on their website www.chromehotel.in Their online booking form is relatively simple, even for a novice like me.

The hotel is definitely a breath of fresh air especially compared to the ornate, staid hotels that are generally present in this part of the world. They have played around with colours and I specially like the Nosh with its fuchsia separators. The food is out of the world. Also, its really close to al the shopping places and yummy Kol chaat places.

Rooms are nice, very very clean and spacious the bathroom was very clever with an awesome power shower. One can watch tv from the bathroom. I liked the fact that they had women centric magazines and that only female room service people served me. They also gave me a room nearest to the elevator. Their library was interesting with lots of offbeat books and dvds.

All in all, a recommended hotel.

I liked the staff`s ever smiling demeanour, watched some really offbeat movies from their DVD library and ate a lot of room service both from the regular menu and their healthy eating menu.

Didnt use the business center but did use the excellent wifi, which was FREE (the way it should be).

Stayed at Chrome for 2 days in the beginning of December and was pleasantly surprised with what was in the offing. Chrome was is a whole new language of hotel design, I was totally amazed by what they`ve done there. The staff was extremely courteous even while being casual, adding to the personal touch. Their breakfast spread was really really massive. Their beds were really comfortable and I liked the fact that they didnt charge anything for internet WIFI. Even though my company paid for the room, it was great value. After touring our rural distributors for 3 days, Chrome helped me feel at home again. They had a crazily named restaurant called 'KhanaSutra' which I enjoyed to the fullest . It was slightly expensive, but worth every penny. The service was fantastic, of standards I haven't seen before .Cool touch was the rose scented face towels they bring to you at the begining of the meal and the niceties go on. I needed to have a private discussion over dinner so I hired one of their "Chefs Studios"
I felt like royalty eating there!

This is a terrific hotel. Modern, not too ornametal, minimalistic yet classy, incredibly attentive and gracious staff, etc... My room was beautiful, spacious, cool colors. The hotel is adjacent to a major shopping centre and also very accessible to other key areas. The location is walkable and feels safe.

It is, of course, moderately expensive. But most people who end up there are expecting that so won't be so shocked by the sticker price (on things like the buffet breakfast or dinner alacarte for instance.) The food is great - breakfast buffet is terrific. If you're travelling on business and you opt for the executive transfer/pick-up from the airport you will be treated like a visiting celebrity escorted to a luxury sedan. The driver dressed in pure white attire, white gloves open the doors and offer you some good magazines and a ice cold water bottle. The height of luxury. Of course, for 1/4th the price you can just take a cab but that's nowhere near as much fun!

My family just loved this hotel. Staff was so friendly and helpful. We took a cab from the airport. We had a beautiful room 506, tastefully designed and have appropriate lighting. My son was in a room that even had a Bose music system and a DVD player. The hotel has a collection of DVD's which you can select from their library completely free of cost. Rooms were clean, bathrooms well designed. The glass panel on the walls is a unique design, towels were huge and soft! I wish there was a hair dryer too. But we got one when requested with the maid services. The minibar had enough room to put in our own water and soda, a huge plus for us. The closets were large but they did lack some drawer space, which is my only complaint and there were shelves so it really wasn't a problem. The room was most tasteful. Breakfast had me at the stunning fresh fruit display with apples, grapes, pears, strawberries, pine apples, mangoes etc., but in addition to that, there was an abundance of food, freshly baked bread, fresh squeezed orange juice and pine apple juice (as the waiter explained the dishes). Coffee was good and one could suggest your liking to the cooks who are behind the instant food counters. It didn't matter if you arrived early or late, there was always plenty of food. There were lots of tables to eat at, including those in their designer gazebos, which made for a perfect setting. The hotel is well located right in the down town. We walked up the street to where all the restaurants and shops are - some fancier than others. We bought an item and sadly, most stores do not ship, but the experience at the post office was ever so educational. (Don't know if we will ever get it though.) I highly recommend this hotel (best we stayed with the best customer attention).
The hotel lacks a pool and a fitness centre. However there was a note from the hotel manager that these facilities shall be ready in the next couple of months.

Stayed here for the 6th time in this year in this lovely hotel..and I should admit that my stay was as pleasant as always. The property is very intimate which brings me back here again and again.

Rooms are modern, well designed, comfy beds, good bathrooms although the shower area is a bit too small.

Breakfast spead is superb, served at their restaurant. Restaurant staff are very attentive and one interesting factor is that they remember my preferences from my earlier stay !! Three cheers to the restuaurant team.

I tried room service and that was prompt as always. The fresh orchid flower stalk on your food tray looks nice. the waiters are always pleasant. Room Cleaning boys do their best to keep the room in the best outfit.

I am also impressed by the response time of the management to your queries. When I first stayed here, I had some problems with the food (too spicy) and did leave my written comments while I checked out. Did not expect anyone to bother much on this remark. To my surprise, I got a call the next day from the executive chef of the hotel. Well, atleast someone has taken pain to look into the feedbacks. It did not stop there, I also received a email from the hotel manager and his personal assurance. I am now fully convinced that the management of this hotel is serious about their business. The promise is still now not broken and I always receive the best of the services at Chrome hotel and with no hesitation I could recommend this hotel to anyone.

Cheers!

We stumbled upon this hotel serendipitously. Our original plans called for our last night of vacation to be in Kolkata in a over rated hotel. However, in the end, when we arrived at this hotel we were turned away because the hotel was sold out and the only option was to stay at a suite with 4 times the price. We found this very rude from the personnel of this Five Star hotel. Anyway, we decided to try our luck to drive around and see if we can find a better option.

We had passed the Chrome hotel a couple of times during the trip to our previous hotel and the colorful building will not skip your attention. So we decided to just drive into this hotel and see if we could get a last minute deal across the desk. Since we normally stay at only upscale hotels, the first impression of this hotel was indeed great.

Well, when we arrived, I was completely blown away by well designed lobby with attentive staff with always smiling faces and ready to help. The staff behind the reception could have noticed the tired look on our faces... with no hesitation the sweet lady offered us a cold and refreshing drink. How thoughtful of the hotel staff !!!!! Check in process was smooth. A lady escorted us to our room and she even checked our reading preferences. I have seen in other hotels that either you are escorted to the room by a hotel porter. But here at Chrome hotel, there are dedicated people to show you the way to your room. Three cheers to the management for this wonderful thought. Very much personalized.

Obvious care and artistry had gone into the architecture and furnishings of this hotel. I'd never seen such lovely hotel furniture and fixtures--the lovely bathroom, the large window door etc..
The restaurant was also very good although pricey. The buffet breakfast was super as well.

The staff went out of its way to help us out. They win the "best hotel staff" award of the trip.

My husband and I agreed that next time we come to Kolkata, we would surely use this hotel.

I stayed at the Chrome recently, after getting a super deal online. The best part of the hotel is the location as it is very close to most of the places in Central Calcutta. It has an interesting building, clean and comfortable rooms and most importantly, a smiling staff. The service is a bit slow at time but will pass that for this time. The breakfast was great as well. With the opening of their new bar soon, it should be the place to be!

I stayed at the CHROME for a night and enjoyed their hospitality. Its modern and chic look is commensurate to what they claim about the hotel. The hotel is located close to park street. Their best part was the good breakfast menu. Few observations they need to look into : (1) The entry into the gate till the lobby is drab and needs to be more inviting like a good 5 star hotel should be. (2) The study chair looked worn out and needs replacement. (3) when i had intimated about my check out time, the reception was not prepared for the formalities and i had to wait for some time.

On the whole the experience at the Chrome has been satisfying.

Would say that it was a 5 star property worth spending the amount they had charged ..!
Would definately stay during my next business visit ..

Modern, well priced, central. Some nice design touches although some are certainly not durable enough for a high volume hotel. Rave music in the lobby is just weird. Food was really good however and service was average. Compared to other hotels in the area which we stayed in at the same price - it came out tops. What annoyed us is that they advertised a lot of facilities that were simply not open or there when we arrived. There was no indication that they would not be ready when we booked. The information given was that the facilities were in place. Naughty. However, overall, I would recommend this hotel.

I personally love the chrome!! Its a business hotel - not flamoboyant in its style but chic!

The ambience is quiet and professional.
The rooms are nice and cozy...the best part is its elegant shower and its array of pillows! A great place to stay after a tough day at work!

The location of the hotel is pretty central given its proximity to park street and camac street. So you are not too far away from good eateries and shopping centres as well!
The staff is courteous and very helpful. All the basic amenities are there. The hotel does lack a swimming pool but as I've been told by the staff, the pool is also on it way soon!

The breakfast buffet could do with some improvement in terms of the choices being offered. However, the food is pretty decent.
The only thing that this hotel needs is a spa and a pool!

All in all, a good experience and I would easily recommend it to people!

Chrome is situated in the heart of Kolkata, a stones throw from Park street which is the most prominent landmark of Kolkata.
The hotel gives you a very vibrant and exuberant feel to it especially because its fairly new. The rooms are decently sized and extremely comfortable. I really loved the soft beds and choice of pillows (hard/soft). I would rate the quality of rooms as good as 5 star.
The food is extremely good especially if the guest wants a feel of the local cuisine. There are wide choices of Continental, Chinese and Italian too.
The crew are exceptionally good and warm. Smartly dressed they will give you a very youthful feel to their overall service

I have stayed at the Chrome for the entire duration of a project in Kolkata - It was chosen initially as it offered the best value for money, with the luxury being better than some of the so called '5 star' hotels in Kolkata.

Chrome describes itself as 'Chic' and 'Plush' - I would agree. The first thing you will notice is the 'Cheese Block' architecture, with circular lights on the facade of the building, which keep changing colour.

The rooms though not very big, are well furnished, clean along with all modern amenities. The food is really good and reasonably priced as well. The wifi at Chrome is pretty awesome. The staff is polite and would generally try and make your stay very comfortable. It's located in the heart of busy Kolkata... within 15 minutes of Park Street etc. It's a perfect hotel for a business trip.

The downsides - the service tends to be slightly inconsistent, but nothing major. ( 3 out of 5 rooms had fruit baskets and 2 didn't, welcome drinks are offered on some visits, and sometimes are totally forgotten about!)

What the hotel is lacking is additional facilities like a parour, gymn, swimming pool, indoor games etc. Another irritant can be the road noise - if you get the road facing rooms. But that would be true for most hotels in this busy part of the town.

All in all, I would rate my stay as very comfortable.

I've stayed at several 5-star hotels in India. This is supposedly rated a 5-star hotel. By Indian standards, yes, it's 5-star. By international standards, might be a slight stretch to call it 5-star.

The service was OUTSTANDING. The staff was very accommodating. For this reason alone I'd come back. The beds were very comfortable. Modern amenities like LCD TV, lounge chair and desk and chair were there. The food was good, but the menu was limited and sort of all over the place. Not quite continental and and not quite Indian. Not quite inexpensive, and not quite top of the line.

The decor of the hotel was nice. Had a modern decor. Very different than the Taj or Oberoi, which is more of a luxury, old world feel. Unfortunately, Indian craftsmen constructed the hotel and small little details were overlooked like leaky doors on the shower stalls.

This is a new hotel and taxi drivers don't know where it is. So getting to the hotel from whereever you are, can be troublesome unless you know how to communicate to taxi drivers. There isn't much around this hotel in terms of shopping or sightseeing. I'd say location and lack of noteriety is it's number 1 problem.

If you're looking for a nice hotel, that's comfortable for American travelers, and that will provide great service, but you can't quite afford the Taj or Oberoi, then this is the next best option.

We stayed at Chrome hotel from 14-16 feb. We had arranged a pickup and drop off from the airport which worked very well although not very cheap.

The design of the hotel is very interesting and modern. We found it enjoyable. The rooms were not large but well appointed and pleasant to be in except for one thing: the very audible street noise from outside. We asked to change rooms more to the back of the hotel and the noise was slightly less but still loud traffic noise (cars beeping all the time). We live in Bangalore but felt the horn was used a lot more in kolkata then in Bangalore. There is also a mosque right behind the hotel which is clearly audible in the room. I slept very well but my wife is a light sleeper and we were thinking of changing hotels. However in the evening the noise died down somewhat and with earplugs it was doable.

Otherwise the hotel is very centrally located and getting to the interesting spots in Kolkata was easy. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was fine and they made a very nice omelet. The coffee was not very good, but we do have pretty high standards when it comes to our coffee.

The diner on the ground floor had tables with chairs that were too low to eat comfortably and they were obviously not well matched. Perhaps a price to pay for bespoke design.

Overall an enjoyable stay but we will look for a more quiet location next time.

A local friend recommended Chrome for its central location, close to Victoria Memorial, Park Street etc. Whilst the location is good, it is on a main road thus a little noisy, and is not in walking distance of any shops, restaurants etc. However local taxis are cheap, metered and quickly available - and the doormen are helpful at briefing the mostly non-english speaking taxi drivers. But the main pluses are as follows:
+++ Extremely comfy soft beds and pillows (so welcome after hard beds in Assam!)
+++ large flat screen tv with BBC news & free WifI
++breakfast buffet - recommend the delicious freshly made masala dosa, fresh fruit juices & cappucino coffee
++ fast friendly service - bucket of ice delivered within minutes, free shoe clean - the 'Anything' button on the phone brings you anything.
The hotel is very modern, wacky design, and the restaurant is rather characterless but for the cost it is excellent value (c£107 pn). The only downside is the proximity to the mosque and daily wake-up call at 4am!!! Some tips:
- book directly via the hotel website - we did it thru Travelguru but were subsequently offered a better deal 3 nights for 2 from the hotel directly
- insist on room above 3rd floor as their function room is on 2nd floor and thumps out loud music when they have parties! Upper level rooms may also get less road noise.
- bring ear plugs!!
- For excellent Bengali food, go to Kewpies Kitchen in Elgin lane, a short taxi ride away.
They are adding a swimming pool and salon/spa which should be open in March.

When it comes to look and decor, this award winning Hotel definitely showcases what its got. The contemporary, chic look is a big attraction. But thats only the starting. When you get inside, you see the continuation of the new age decor. It looks more like gallery than a hotel. Even finer details like the elevator, common space - they all are a continuation. But its the room decor thats the biggest plus. Its cozy, contemporary and very art house. The toilet is placed cleverly without taking much space, but without missing anything out. The toiletries are a big A+. In terms of servise, the hotel can do better, as the service people are a bit slow. But the food is small in variety but high in taste and quality. The location of the hotel is awesome as its walking distance from all the main attractions like New Market and other shppoing centers.

For a mid-range traveler in Calcutta, its the hotel of choice.

the check in was hassle free and the rooms were awesome. The best that i loved in the room was in the evening when I got back after work the bed was soft and nice and there was a personal note from the MD everyday with a small note that described the news headlines of the day under the heading "while you were away". This was incredible

Breakfast was a good spread and I had 1 dinner in my room, which was decent. Liquor is a trifle expensive.

Only crib was for 2 of the 3 days that I was there, there was a wedding party and my floor was filled with noisy wedding crowd. i am not too fussy, so it was fine...not sure how a fuzzy guest would have reacted

Many hotels in Kolkata have a long history of hospitality, service and tradition attached to them. With Oberoi Grand leading the pack in luxury and hospitality, Park Hotel famous for its night life options, ITC Sonar Bangla being the first choice for the top business executives visiting Kolkata, any new hotel in the 3 – 5 star category will need a lot of work to do to establish it’s own identity. Hotel Chrome at AJC Bose Road had atleast tried to make an effort to give itself a separate identity. The location of the hotel is very suitable if you have work in the central Kolkata area. Located at AJC Bose Road, within walking distance of another well known hotel of Kolkata - Hotel Hindustan International (HHI), Chrome has tried to distinguish itself by stylish facade, clean and contemporary interiors and rooms which are modern and comfortable.

On entering the compound of the hotel the guests are received with a folded hands Namaste by the security person, which is a nice diversion from the salutes the security persons at other hotels give. The check in process doesn’t take much time and one is in the room within 10-15 minutes of entering the hotel.

The rooms are comfortable, with all the things available which are expected in a four star hotel. Being on the main AJC Bose Road, which has a very heavy and noisy traffic, I found the sound insulation of the rooms towards the road inadequate, as the noise used to seep in and disturbed the early morning sleep. Would recommend rooms away from the road for anyone contemplating to stay there. Fitted with an LCD TV, the room also has an electric kettle for making tea/coffee. A mini bar is there, with soft drinks, wine and beer. The price of the products stocked in mini bar is absolutely a rip off to say the least. A bottle of Sula wine of MRP Rs 260/- is available at around Rs 600/-, a soft drink can of Rs20/- is sold at Rs80/-. These are inclusive of taxes and service charges, but I don’t think all these add up more than 100% of the MRP. I would have had a few drinks from the mini bar if they had put a reasonable mark up, instead I bought beer and drinks from outside and used the mini bar to chill them. I guess it’s the hotel which lost the revenue, the beer and soft drinks company still had their customer.

The operation of the AC and lights can controlled through a panel near the bed and is very convenient. The window blind can be raised and lowered through an electric switch, which is also very convenient.

The buffet breakfast spread is quite varied and the menu is changed everyday. I did miss sprout though which I prefer in the morning.

The hotel is around two years old, and the taxi drivers call it “Chocolate Hotel” rather than Chrome. The name of the group running the hotel is The Chocolate Hotel Group.

I had stayed twice within last one year in this hotel. First time was in September 2009, last time was last month. There are three things in which the hotel needs to pull up its socks, one its prices are not reasonable enough. I paid Rs5000/- plus taxes per night in April 2010 (it was Rs4560/- per night incl. taxes in Sep 2009). I think if they had priced it at Rs4000/- + taxes it would seem more value for money. Secondly the hotel environment is too quiet, sometimes bordering on the spookiness. The nearby Hotel Hindustan is full of life as soon as evening sets in with live bands playing in the restaurants, there is a discotheque and overall feeling is that of activity. In Chrome, one is forced to move towards one’s room as soon as its evening as there’s nothing to do or see outside the rooms. Finally the service of the hotel is quite unreliable. I had to call up maybe 5 times in the morning to clear the plates of the previous night’s dinner. Each time they had a different excuse for not clearing it, initially they said its too early in the morning, it was 7 am, so I need to wait half an hour, next they said they have informed their restaurant, next time they said they are surprised no one came, finally they cleared the plates at 11 am, four hours after I had requested and when I was on the verge of checking out. Similar story was repeated when I asked for fresh tea cups.

Overall a comfortable hotel, located at a convenient location, I guess if they work on their service and pricing a little bit, they would be able to send back guests fully satisfied.

I stayed here for a week and would definitely recommend it. As everyone has said previously, there are some very nice things about this hotel.

My favourite bits were the free wifi, friendliness and responsiveness of staff, quality of fittings, cleanliness of rooms. The bed was amazing & I slept very, very well.

The restaurants are good without being very great & the breakfast buffet is not as good as other business hotels but still very nice.

My only gripes were minor things that the top hotels would have not had, but this one did. There was a very slight smell of cigarette smoke in the room. I usually complain about this, but it wasnt really that bad compared to some hotels in India. Being so new & not having carpet floors probably helps too. The bathroom basin didnt drain very well, but it didnt really affect me. Finally, my front door didnt shut properly of its own accord. Luckily I noticed on the first day & made sure to always pull it shut tightly.

But irrespective of these minor things, I would definitely recommend this hotel. It is very well priced and has everything you really need. I also understand that a pool & gym is on its way.

I stayed at Chrome for three nights in February 2010 for a trip that was a mixture of work and tourism.

It's a new property with a very modern feel, which is quite the contrast from 'old Kolkata' just out the door. About a year after opening, the rooms are holding up fine. Mine, on the sixth floor, was spotless and well appointed - black-out blinds and rain shower were a definite plus - and it was suitably sound-proofed so you couldn't hear the party on the rooftop bar (just one floor up). Some of the common areas could use a bit of attention, though (particularly the breakfast restaurant, where my table linen had a burn mark two days running and the walls are developing quite a collection of scuff marks).

The location was convenient enough - while there's not much within easy walking distance, it's a short ride in one of Kolkata's ubiquitous Ambassador taxis from a lot of the main tourist attractions (Victoria Memorial, the Maidan, Park Street etc.).

The staff were invariably friendly and generally competent.

While Chrome lacks some of the frills of a five-star hotel (no pool or gym as far as I could tell), it was clean and comfortable and perfectly adequate for my purposes.

The rooms are nice, bright and clean, the staff very helpful.
The hotel doesn't yet have a full alchohol license though and is not allowed to have alcholic drinks in the mini-bars. The way round this is simply to have a few bottles of beer delivered to the room and stock the fridge yourself :)
The 1st floor restaurant (also used for breakfast) is excellent.
The 7th floor lounge is not open yet, neither is the spa. Hopefully they will be open early next year when I plan to return.

I stayed here for a night while hopping in cal. This brings life on a rather dull and boring AJC Bose road. You can easily spot it as a structure with a lot of lights after a long drive after building some of which the British have left us.

Its quite welcoming and different from the standard five stars. The staff are genuinely nice. When you walk into the rooms you cannot find the room numbers. You gotto look down to see which room you are staying in, which is again different. The loos are what I liked the most. It had test tubes all over. From the pot you have a direct view to the plasma if you remove the curtains.

There is a nice couch in the corner and a decently done work desk. You dont have to bother looking at where to call for what, just dial an option called 'anything.' It has a library which is stocked with some good stuff you might wanna check while you are staying here.

They call one of their food places , khana sutra. It is elegantly done and the food is great.
I guess over all it would make a great stay.

Unable to get a room at the HHI, I was forced to stay at the Chrome for a night on my last trip to Calcutta. Had received positive feedback about the hotel so was not too perturbed. My experience was, however, quite disappointing. The best thing about the hotel is its location. Situated on the Lower Circular Road, you are within walking distance of Park Street, the happening secot of the city.

The rooms are small and the windows overlook the neighbouring office block. The building being disprportionalely large for the size of the plot, the hotel has virtually no grounds at all. So if you draw the curtain and look out, you are only a few feet away from the building next door. Not a pleasant feeling I can tell you.

The hotel is expensive. It cost me more than HHI to stay there even though the rooms are smaller than those in HHI. The staff can be more helpful. I asked room service for a packet of Wills Navy Cut ( cigarette) and was told that brand is not available in the hotel. When I asked them why it could not be procured from a cigarette vendor within twenty yards of the hotel gate, I was told this is not the policy of the hotel.

The room was much too small for the kind of money they charge with hardly any space between the bed and the TV. the bathrooms too felt cramped on account of their size. Space is clearly something they have economised on while building the hotel and it clearly shows.

The buffet breakfast, I must say, was excellent. It could have been more sumptuous and the qulity of fruit served could have been better, but having said that, the Radha Vallabhi was marvellous. The omlette served too was close to perfect and the ham was fresh and tasty. The bread was just so so but the coffee was good.

Bottom line - not recommended.

It is a very good business hotel with one exception - smoke everywhere. A non-smoker's nightmare... They need to dedicate at least one floor to non-smokers. They gave me a room that was supposed to be non-smoking. It was fine until I went there to sleep. People in other rooms were smoking and the smoke migrated through the toilet vent, and under the door into the room. They gave me a better room elsewhere, but this agony can be easily avoided if they would dedicate one floor to non-smokers.
Otherwise, it is a good hotel.

But when we went to the reception, they said the rooms are not ready yet and we need to wait for 30 minutes for the cleaning to be complete.

Hotel chrome is very attractive hotel interiors as well as exteriors. But only looks do not make things great in the service industry. As this hotel is missing very minor but important things. Which must be taken care of properly. If you spent Rs.6000/- for per day, you expect more from the hotel. e.g. slippers provided in the room are look like ladies size, it was very hard to put your foot inside, its very minor but very irritating some time & hotel has no option for that to change with another one. Bathroom toiletories are not up the mark, no shaving kit is available, quality of towels are poor, looking very old , hard to skin. Breakfast has limited choices to eat, if you do not like any dish you have to depnd on only juice.Room fruit basket is having only one fruit.

Service is good, Staff is courteous & smiling...........sounds great.

This hotel has to work hard to beat the market challenges. As many better hotels are available nearby with better prices & amenities compare to Chrome. So there's no reason to choose this, if they can improve with lower prices than its a complete value for money.

I wish best of luck to this hotel for betterment & continue best services.

The Chrome hotel is an upmarket, smart styled, very recent hotel, located in the southern part of Central Kolkata (walking distance to Park Rd, Victoria Hall, etc.). The rooms have a decent size, are functionally well-designed, and the bed is very comfortable. The bathroom is small but again very functional, with a nice shower with plenty of hot and softened water. Wireless internet is freely available in the rooms and reception, and works well. The personel is nice and efficient. Breakfast is excellent (with dosas, pancakes or omelettes made on order), and the restaurant is also recommended.
There is a killer however: street noise. The hotel is on one of the main roads leading to the center, and right in front of the hotel the road is doubled by an elevated expressway. This wouldn't have been much of a problem if the hotel had been built with efficient sound-proof windows and materials (like the ones used in airport hotels). But this is not the case, and much of the street noise (including the permanent horning that is the rule in India) sneaks right into the room. Even earplugs are not of much help. On top of that, on the backside there is a mosque, with the muezzin yelling into extremely loud speakers the call to the morning prayer at sunrise (5 am): you will be able to hear that perfectly from your bed and will wake you up early in case you finally got your brain accustomed to the traffic...
To conclude, this is a very nice hotel, but given the noise issue, I wouldn't recommend it (except for easy sleepers).

I was in Kolkata for business for 2 days and decided to stay at the Chrome after going through their website. What attracted me was the amenities in the room and the fact that hotel was relatively new. The location was also convenient.

I arrived quite late in the hotel and was greeted by a very friendly staff at the reception. The check-in process was smooth and quick. The room itself was very nicely appointed and clean.

The bathroom was a bit small but very well done and hence no problems.

Reaching late, I ordered room service and the order came in around 30 mins. The food itself was quite good and well presented.

I liked that fact that WiFi was complimentary (you rarely see this in the hotels in India) and the speed was quite decent.

Next day the breakfast was fine with a nice spread and good service.

Overall I would say that the hotel go pretty much everything right for the business traveler.

However I would probably not return to the hotel due to one important factor. The rooms are extremely noisy. I was on the 6th floor and even changed by room. But the noise from the streets is very loud and annoying. There is also a mosque next to the hotel and the prayer call at 4:30 am is very loud and on both days I woke up due to this.

The hotel certainly needs to improve the sound proofing through their windows without which a good nights sleep would not be possible.

This was my first stay in a hotel of this category: Luxury boutique hotel so I ended up comparing with any other luxury hotel that I could have got for the similar price in that location. I visited Kolkatta over a weekend and almost all the luxury hotels offer weekend discounts of upto 25% including Taj Bengal. The difference in the tariff was not much (~ INR 1.5k )
Some observations:
i) Chrome has a great location, right in the heart of all activities.
ii) The lobby is jazzy and appealing for a hotel of its size.
iii) The reception/check-in was quick and comfortable.
iv) The first impression when you enter the room: Its neat and clean and a scaled down model of any luxury hotel room. The bathroom was small with no bathtub.
v) The reading bed lamp switch never worked and it was a pain to switch off the light. The shower box in the bathroom was so small that even with a normal built that my hands kept hitting the walls. Another problem that I realized comes with small shower area is that there is no place to stand clear when you turn on the shower and wait for the hot water to flow out! You have to face the chilled water!
vi) Somehow the infrastructure seemed of poor quality: tiles were chipped at places and patched up with white cement/ the LCD screen had poor resolution and that too with almost zero contrast!
vii) The bed was good and I had a comfortable sleep BUT come morning and the room lightens up as the window cover lets the light in form all sides! I slept late but had to get up early as I cannot sleep in light!
viii) The breakfast spread was limited but good taste!
ix) I requested a late checkout on phone first and was told that it was not possible beyond 1:30PM. I was a bit surprised as it was a dull Sunday. However when I went to the front desk they readily offered a 3PM checkout with a smile!

All in all, I would suggest that consider this hotel only if you cannot get a luxury hotel at a tariff in the range of INR 2 k over Chrome's tariff.

Stayed at Chrome, Kolkata on my business visit for 1 night. It was recommended to me by friend in Kolkata. However, at the time of booking only felt the Price was very high for a Boutique Hotel. When I reached, felt a little dissapointed. The first look when u enter the coridor is very gloomy. The room looks good at fisrt, but the space constrain in front of the bed gets to you after some time. Though it is very clean and well maintained, I thought the price was pretty steep.

Checked in past midnight to catch a few hours rest before checking out to catch an early morning flight. The room alloted was adjacent to the flyover and request to move to a quieter room was brushed aside with no other rooms available.
inadequately insulated windows and Traffic through the night would, in all proability, be a cause for concern with most rooms in the hotel.
A less than welcoming checkin and check out; packed breakfast comprising of a couple of sandwisces, an apple and a juice wrapped in foil in a polythene bag really streches the 5 star tag.
Room and bathrrom were very clean, Rain shower, no tub. The table was very small - inadequate as a workspace, frayed single sofa a scratched glass table top.

I have been staying in The Chrome since October 2009, and also written about it favourably in my review on May 2010. I had a lot of expectation from this hotel in terms of service, comfort and value, sadly in all the three it is steadily deteriorating.

Recently I stayed at Chrome for three 3nights, 9th, 10th and 11th May 2011. First let me talk about value, priced at Rs5400 + taxes without a gym or a swimming pool (which every time I visit for last one and a half year they are promising will be opened soon) has started to look like exhorbitant. If we factor in the poor service then it will seem more like a rip off. I had ordered room service first night. Firstly they close their kitchens early, so they told me I won't get chowmein as the cook had left. Only the leftovers were available which I agreed to have as I was very hungry. I told the room service waiter to clear the plates after half an hour but he never came back. By morning the room was smelling. To compound things the noise from street seeps in and I didn’t have a nice sleep (I was staying in room no. 606). On breakfast table a lady manager asked me for feedback, when I told her that I could not sleep due to noise seeping in she trivialized it saying it is expected as it is on the road. Also I told her about the non-clearance of plates at night which she promised will be taken care in future. On the last night also I ordered room service, and history repeated itself, no one came to clear the plates whole night. Further in the morning I was getting calls from the reception regarding when I will check out. I requested for a bell boy to take my luggage, but inspite of my repeated requests the bell boy didn’t arrive. I rushed down to the reception to check out and complained to the front desk executive, who said that this is happening as they have only one bell boy for the whole hotel. I nearly missed my flight as it took nearly an hour for my luggage to come down, I could have done it myself quicker.

The breakfast is also very limited with very little health food and limited variety. I have told atleast 5 times in my last 5 visits that sprouts and various fruits should be increased, but I have not seen anything getting implemented. Also during breakfast the waiter comes once to enquire the room number but they never come back to enquire about water or any other need. So you have to literally shout to get the attention of the waiters.

I have decided not to waste my time and money anymore in The Chrome, as better hotels are coming up in Kolkata, or hotels with similar comfort are available at lower price

We were looking forward to our 5 night stay at this new 'luxury' hotel, the first of its type in Kolkata, but unfortunately it was a disaster from start to finish. It's an impressive building, the lobby looks amazing as you arrive, but for me the hotel was all about style and not about the guest experience.

The rooms werent clean when we arrived, bedsheets looked grubby and housekeeping had to re-clean them and change the beds while we were out for dinner. Despite this the new bedlinen was still torn and frayed. The bathrooms are tiny and grubby. Nothing was well maintained even though the hotel is only three years old. The towel rail broke on the first night. The luggage rack wasnt big enough for a standard size suitcase (why?) and the wardrobe not tall enough to hang anything longer than a shirt (strange for a luxury hotel). Don't expect to be able to hang up a dress. The desk was too small to really do any work on, and there are so many lights you spend a lot of time flicking a lot of switches.

The hotel is literally metres from a big busy flyover and there is no double glazing - so it is VERY noisy. It does not allow for a good nights sleep. Housekeeping were vacuuming loudly outside the room at 7.30 am. The hotel website raves about the beds but really they are just standard matresses and nothing special.

The breakfast is ok, there is a chef doing hot orders but it doesnt compare to other 4 and 5* hotels I've stayed in all over India. Restarant staff were attentive but the little touches were lacking - wilted and dead flowers in vases, frayed and grubby napkins, stains on the table cloths, exposed wires hanging over the hot buffet heaters.

There were a few positives, the staff were helpful and friendly, (mostly it seems they were embarassed about our experience), there was free wi-fi, the power shower was very good and the electric blinds were quite nice.

But overall it was one thing after another and we had to speak to the duty managers every day about some new problem or other. The drawbacks of the hotel may not be obvious for a short stay so it might be ok for a night - but only if you don't mind two star guest house experience at 5* prices.

I really expected more from a small luxury hotel of the world.

Stayed there for just one night, simply becos trip advisor rating was 5. The hotel is not bad, is clean, rooms are small modern n clean. But something is just missing! its surprising that it can be even in top 10! The staff is very lethargic and average. Waiting time for check in is the norm even when you can hurry up. Food is not bad, but just above average. Overall lacklustre. Location seems central, but anyplace you want to go is atleast 30-45 minutes away. Boring hotel!

The room was good. But earlier we were getting this hotel room for 3,500Rs. Due to some conference in Kolkata during 2nd week of December, the hotel charged us bomb- to the tune of 5,500 Rs. per night. They took a lot of time for check in. The staff was not trained and was cribbing. The only good part was the breakfast spread. The staff was courteous and spread was goo there.

What have they done to this hotel ? The privacy in the lobby is totally lost with a new door facing right to a ugly guard room next to the main entrance gate. The passers by ogle at you which is un-comfortable. The luxury what i received during my earlier stay on my pick up from the airport is non-existant. They've sent me a ugly car with the driver hardly could communicate anything other than Bengali. No more white gloved service. The service levels in the hotel have deteriorated. No one to escort you to the room. Room upkeep was low. No slippers were provided. It looks like the hotel is under a new management and it would have been better if they could have learned some good service tips from the previous owners.

I have been staying in this hotel on several occasions over the last one year and have noticed that this hotel is running down on its services and quality over the last month. I always liked this hotel simply because of its location and most importantly the can-do attitude of the staff . My last stay in this hotel was totally a nightmare (thus this review). Lazy staff at the reception. No warmth. Instead of a can-do attitude, it seems they have developed a can’t-do attitude ! Check in was delayed. Even after having stayed in this hotel on several occasions, no one could recognize me and they did not even bother to check my preferences. I was given a room near the fly-over which I always hated (as there is no sound proofing and the vehicles just honks into your ears. Also the big speaker of the mosque next door faces the hotel and you are woken up as early as 5 am with loud recitals ) and requested for a change. I was told that all the other rooms are full and the rest are not cleaned by their cleaning department ! I had to survive in that room for a night without any sleep and checked out the very next day itself. Can anyone imagine the condition of myself who had travelled some 10 hours the previous day, no sleep in the night and supposedly doing an important meeting the very next day ?

Apart from this, I neither got any welcome drink nor an attempt to offer one. Earlier days, I was always asked for refreshments and was always served something refreshing. When I asked the reception about this, I was told that the same is on the way. Well, even after a good one hour nothing came and I did not even bother to follow up. Not that I just want to nag about not receiving a petty welcome drink. But the courtesy offered is what I meant. While checking out, when asked for the other supporting bills, reception staff could not locate it. This delayed the check out process too. The quality of room cleanliness has definitely gone done. Bedsheets had brown spots, towels were torn to shreds, no slippers provided, half filled conditioners and shampoo in the room (may be used by some one else), low water pressure, no step mats provided etc. Some friends came by and we asked for drinks, this was not available as there is no bar license in this hotel. I would probably rate this a 3 star hotel with 5 star prices. A total rip off !

Asked to speak to the manager. Unfortunately no managers were available or the manager did not want to meet us. I was also not offered a comment card where I could pen down my frustration. I was never treated this horrible manner ever during my several hotel stays in India & abroad. Overall a pathetic experience.

This is with reference to our experience at Hotel Chrome during our last visit to Kolkata.
The overall attitude and behavior of the front office staff and the General Manager at Chrome was absolutely uncouth, insensitive and “We don’t care for our guests” type. This was accentuated by the unruly behavior and approach taken by the GM of the hotel. Being in the Hospitality industry, they should realize the importance of being courteous and should be polite to say the least.
Our bitter experience started the moment we entered the hotel for check-in. The hotel could not recall our reservation and as always made us wait for an unprecedented amount of time without any reason. To make matters worse, they informed us that we would have to pay higher room rates than our usual approved rates as per the corporate tie-up with the hotel. They then raised their voices and fingers at us which by no means in a way to deal with humans, let alone guests staying at the hotel.
The above occurrence has left a negative impression about the staff of Hotel Chrome on us and makes us feel uncomfortable to stay with them ever again.

The staff though very nice and friendly lack etiquette and professionalism. The bed linen is smelly, dirty, stained and torn to shreds. The towels and bath robe is discoloured, smelly and filthy. The slippers provided are used torn and has food stuck to it. The water pressure is too low to be effective. The windows should have been sound proofed, any way they might as have skipped on putting the windows as it only makes the room noisy and claustrophobic while alowing in no natural light. The rooms also have a musty smell, and the nooks and crannies of not just the room but the whole hotel is dusty and dirty. If the food served here is gourmet, then the word gourmet sure needs to be re-defined. Must admit the best of the material is used in making of the place but the workmanship is so bad it just loses its charm. The safe is missing. There is no proper dressing area or table, not even a well lit manifying mirror in the bathroom. The test tube toileteries are dirty, possibly used.

Judge for yourself

I stayed in mid June 09 for 3 nights.

- The hotel took full advance payment for 3 nights sighting me a s a new customer. This was a first for me.

- Despite knowing that there is no hot water, at all in the bathrooms (hotel heaters spoilt) the check in staff fail to mention it.

- The manager when informed about it simply say sorry and make no apology that the hotel takes money in advance, fails to inform guests that hot water is not available and fails to even put a notice to that effect. Clearly deceiving customers. So i ad cold showers morning and evening for 3 days despite having a cold.

- The air-conditioning in the halls were not working (i think it was turned off to save money). So having a meeting in the lobby with customers and colleagues was not possible.

- While the hotel building and rooms are good, the soft skills / service levels are of a 2 star hotel. From managers to serving staff, they have no clue about customer service.

- no napkins are served at breakfast. No knives are available unless asked for.

- despite positioning as a high end hotel, the internet service was not working and despite telling the management, they wait for third parties to do the repairs without any sense of emergency.

- Room service food ordered was presented excellently but Paneer tikka and chicken tikka were both under cooked. The paneer was infact hardly put in the oven. Despite requests for lime & onions, none were served.

- I had incoming urgent faxes (as internet was down) . When i enquired if faxes were received, they say the machine is not working prorperly. Then the story was changed to working properly - except it was not. I had to get the fax sent to my office and a peon got it to me and then sent it out again from a PCO booth.

- The highlight was a great set lunch served. The chef had the meat and the lassi right, including biryanis. Alas, the restaurant has no washrooms - go to the lift, go to the lobby and then go to the toilets.

In short, over hyped and over promised by the management. The GM and the staff have no clue about delivering on the hype. While it is promoted as a boutique hotel, service levels and understanding the concept from the GM down is non existent.

Despite narrating the above to the GM, he thanks me for sharing with him, but considers no reduction in charges or compensation - further adding proof that the misinformation on the water etc was probably deliberate to begin with.

A very poor show indeed and has all the lessons of how not to over promise and under deliver. Good luck to any visitors.
