The hotel is very nice, staff is courteous and the aesthetics have been taken care of very well. From sanitary ware to wallpapers to veneers to LCD, everything is branded. Only disadvantage, once you are in the hotel, u have to take a cab to reach a market or restaraunt. Although one of the best malls, South City is at 10 mins drive. Value for money, recommended!

The Southern Plaza Hotel is on Southern Avenue, a shady and comparatively clean area of Kolkata. The moment you get out of the airport and on to the roads it is a horror story of filth, traffic jams, hawkers and non-stop honking which drives you round the bend. The hotel is on a quiet street which is tree lined and lovely. Its a boutique hotel, new and has all the required amenities and modern comforts to make you comfortable. The only issue is lack of space, the rooms are bearely enough and a column in the centre of our room does not help matters, getting in and out of bed was not easy. Having said that all else is great. Good facilities, good food, courteous service make you forget the space constraint. If its for a short stay and you do not mind a smallish room, this hotel is certainly worth staying at. At Rs.4000/night, its one of the medium range hotels and can be stayed at.

small rooms definitely, but good overall service. reminded me of greece - same matchbox rooms. clean, no pests, good bathrooms - very important! food was fair.
very far from the airport - one and half hours car ride - so plan well in advance for flights.

Everything you see in the hotel is black and white... and if you ever think of taking the stairs in stead of the lift, be sure of having a zebra picture staring at you.
The rooms are very compact, like the whole hotel. Spaces are very small and somehow don't really make you happy. The service is ok, the breakfast also, and check in too.
As a whole the experience was ok and i managed to do my work quite will... but i somehow feel that for the money and for they beauty of calcutta, the hotel does not do justice... which is the reason of not suggesting the hotel.

When I turned up I was put in a room where the AC didn't work, but I got moved with no hassle so that was ok.
Following morning I went down for breakfast - just one guy running the whole show. I waited 20 mins just for my tea. If staff is short they should go for a buffet style breakfast, I had a set pick up time so couldn't hang about.
It took nearly an hour to get a cable to connect to the internet - I went to the front desk to ask and they said they'd send one up. A phonecall later it finally arrived.
The rooms are very nicely fitted out, with smart fixtures and fittings. Lack of staff rather than staff incompetence appears to be the issue. Everything is a struggle here.

Built to economise space, the rooms are very compact; a pillar in the middle of mine restricted space further. Lift, Corridors & Bathrooms are even more 'space challenged'.
Located in a quiet part of town, its distance from the Airport is a disadvantage.
Glitch free service is not possible for this hotel. They goofed on Room Service (the order came in instalments), Airport Pick-up (had to wait outside the airport for 25 minutes), Drop to Middleton Chambers (cab didn't turn up; reception desk had no instructions-despite our personally reiterating this need the night before), Breakfast (venue was shifted to the 'table less' Conference space - ever tried eating Toast, Omelette, Cornflakes etc while balancing the plate, bowl & cutlery in your lap?).
Even the otherwise tasty Chicken Pepper Steak in their Restaurant, was ruined by the rotting Potatoes used for the hash browns.
Am really hard pressed to think of a single redeeming feature....caveat emptor guys !
