We stayed six nights at the Lotus Bay View Hotel and wished it could have been longer. The hotel was very comfortable, the staff delightful and the location was first class; a few steps away from the Bay of Bengal and right in the middle of White Town- the French quarter.
We hadn’t booked in advance as we left Chennai in rather a hurry but my wife had read good things about the place on the internet and so we headed over on foot and asked to see their tariff. Do NOT be put off by their walk in rates (double room INR 3 700), just see the room and then negotiate a fair price. We got a fantastic deal due to our longer stay and both parties were very happy with the arrangement.
We took room #305 which afforded us a view of the water and the pier a short distance away. The large and extremely comfortable bed (the best we’ve had in five weeks of travelling through India) coupled with good linen and two pillows offered us an extremely good night’s sleep and more importantly, it was quiet. The only thing we could occasionally hear were the waves lapping the shore.
The room is a fair size and finished in modern style. You get a small flat screen TV with 100 channels (including film, sport, news and entertainment programmes in English) and plenty of space to set up your laptop for the free wi-fi the hotel provides. Additional wardrobe space, bedside tables and even a dressing table are all present and correct and you have a small sitting area and table by the door.
The room is instantly cooled with a good air conditioning unit but sadly it is noisy and you will need to switch it off at night. All lights work fine and both bed and bath rooms are very clean.
The bathroom is sadly a “wet room†affair (no shower screen) but it is big, bright and airy and you have plenty of space for all your toiletries around the sink. Both sink and shower (excellent, by the way) have hot and cold running water around the clock.
You will only get one key card (which operates the lift too) but to keep power running in your room, simply insert a business card into the slot as this works a treat.
Please be aware that this hotel has a sister establishment elsewhere (Lotus Comfort Hotel) which is more established and also has a restaurant. This one doesn’t, but there are plenty of places to dine locally so it’s not a problem.
We were very pleased we came to Pondicherry and our experience was certainly enhanced by staying at this hotel. It was a real find and we are happy to recommend it on to fellow travellers.
Feel free to contact us directly or visit our Blog (see profile for address or Google “ktelontourâ€) which has pictures, additional details and more ideas of what to do around the area.
NOTE: No fridge, safe or ceiling fan. Breakfast was not included either.
